Spearmint (Garden mint) originally from the Mediterranean, is an aromatic herb, mainly used for culinary purposes in many cuisines. Also used as a flavor in chewing gums and tooth paste. The taste is pleasant but less strong than peppermint.
Spearmint also has medicinal properties; it is used as a natural stimulant, carminative (agent that helps break up and expel intestinal gas) and antispasmodic (helps to control some symptoms arising from the gut intestines). In general, it supports the gastrointestinal system.
Flavnoids, carvone, limonene, other monoterpene hydrocarbons, limonene, cineole, monoterpenes.
The major components of spearmint are (+)-limonene, L-(-)-carvone and dihydrocarveol.
Research has shown that spearmint tea may be used as a treatment for hirsutism (excessive hairiness on women where hair normally is absent or minimal). The anti-androgenic properties reduce the level of free testosterone in the blood, while leaving total testosterone and DHEA unaffected. However more research into the toxic effects of this application in humans is necessary.
Spearmint has also been found as having excellent antioxidant activity; it was found to be comparable to the synthetic BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene).
Traditional medicinal applications
Against nausea, hiccups, flatulence and motion sickness. Also used as a diuretic and helps with stomach and bowel complaints (IBS: Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
It also promotes urine flow and is often given for suppressed or painful urination, especially scalding urine.
Spearmint increases bile production in the stomach and helps with digestion. Also considered an effective expectorant.
Tincture: 2 - 3 ml daily (2 - 3 full droppers daily).
