Overview
This edible orange-yellow fruit (about the size of a chicken egg) from a vicious spiny palm, is an excellent source of carotenoids
(fat soluble pigments) with a very high concentration of β-carotene (precursor of vitamin A).
It is also an important source of vitamin B2 (riboflavin).
The oil extracted from the pulp contains saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids. It is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9.
The fruit contains edible oil with vitamin A (retinol) content; due to this fact, Awara can be utilized against the
eye disease xerophthalmia (ophthalmoxerosis) and other eye disorders of which the deficiency of vitamin A (retinol) is the
main reason.
Constituents
Vitamin A compounds preformed vitamin A (retinol), retinal and retinoic acid) &
provitamin A (carotenoids - alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and beta-crypto-xanthin); Omega 3, 6 and 9.
Pharmacology
Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene has been linked to a decreased risk of certain types of cancer, including
Hodgkin's lymphoma, as well as cervical, lung and bladder cancer.
It has more important functions such as an excellent immune system booster.
Works against night blindness, nyctalopia, (poor vision at night or in dimly lit environments).
Most patients with cystic fibrosis have pancreatic insufficiency, increasing the risk of vitamin A deficiency.
Pregnant and lactating women may need extra vitamin A for fetal growth and tissue maintenance.
